Norsey Wood –
Billericay’s best kept secret

Covering an area of 165 acres Norsey Wood in Billericay enjoys the status of:
Local Nature Reserve, Scheduled Ancient Monument
and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Main entrance to the wood and information centre is located in
Outwood Common Road, just down from the Norsey Road Juction.

NORSEY WOOD

A unique area you must visit

It has a history that goes back some 4000 years and this, together with the richness of its wildlife, makes this site unique.

Its on-site information centre has an exhibition on permanent display and is where the Easy Access Trail can be accessed.

Do you prefer smoother surfaces and gentler slopes?
If so the Easy Access Trail has been specially designed for you.

The Norsey Trail is the new name of the former Nature and Historical Trails.
Trail leaflets when available can be obtained from the information centre.

You can still see today excellent examples of Deerbanks built in the medieval period to protect the wood from deer and cattle and to preserve hunting rights.

Two Bronze Age burial mounds also known as barrows or tumuli have existed in the wood and one still survives measuring about 15m diameter and 1.5m high.

In 1865 an excavation found fragments of Roman pottery, indecipherable bronze coin and three large inverted cinerary urns (vessels containing cremated human remains) which clearly points to Middle Bronze Age origin.

During the summer of 1994 a young boy walking in the Wood made a chance find.
His sharp eyes spotted a stone by the side of the ride
and he realised it was no ordinary stone.

When viewed by Essex County Archaeological department it was discovered to be a (middle stone age) flaked-flint axehead.
